Early Access Suspected to be 5 Days

Published by under Breaking News, rumor on Nov. 04. 2011.

Thanks to Zosha, member of the swtor.com official forums, we might now have the maximum length of early access for the game. Everyone that pre-ordered the game will get early access to the game, prior to official December 20th launch date. Fans have been wondering about how much of a head start will they actually have. Zosha managed to spot in the small print of the US pre-order page that it clearly states that “EARLY GAME ACCESS MAY BE UP TO 5 DAYS”. Until this is officially confirmed (and we are guessing it might get announced even today) treat this as a rumor.

TOR CE Fuss About Nothing

Published by under Beta,Blog,Game Mechanics,news,Pre-Order,rumor,speculation on Jul. 29. 2011.

Before I get into this anyone who whines about the CE being too expensive and are from the US “SCREW YOU ALL”.

*Rant Set To Maximum*

You already have one, if not the lowest priced CE additions on earth how dare you. You only pay $150, I’m paying £129, which is around $200. And then I’m a lot better off than those poor Australians who have great trouble just getting the game and after import tax and such are looking at over $300. So, stop it, right now.

*End Rant*

Now to address all this bitching.

Avengers and Spider-Man trailers leaked

Published by under rumor on Jul. 20. 2011.

The title of this article makes no sense to you? Let me explain. David Bass, SWTOR’s community manager, tweeted these two gems yesterday:

OH MY GOD. Has anyone seen this leaked info that’s all over the web? About the Avengers and Spider-Man trailers?!

Really excited to watch them, but I kind of feel like I should hold off until they’re officially released in theaters.

If you don’t know what this is all about, you should spend more time on the SWTOR related interwebs. If you do, please take David’s advice.

To make things a bit more interesting, here’s a random Star Wars image:

Are We There Yet?

Published by under GamesCom,PAX Prime,rumor,speculation on Jul. 17. 2011.

Wait, what’s that you say?  Another “probable release date” rumor is spreading like wildfire through the SWTOR forums?  Well then by golly, we need to spring to action and report on this!

Are we there yet?????
Are we there yet?????

The “report” that’s making the rounds currently goes a little something like this:

We are officially moving the expected Star Wars launch from September to November. PopCap is not the key to getting ERTS right. We like this acquisition, but this is not going to make or break your ERTS trade this year. The success of Star Wars and Battlefield, on the other hand, will. All eyes now shift to them.

So aside from sounding like it was ripped straight out of a Nostradamus quatrain, what does this mean?

List of Playable Race/Class Combinations

Published by under Class, news, rumor, speculation on Apr. 09. 2011.

PC Gamer 2011 May Cover

Darth Hater got a tip from one of their forum visitors that May issue of UK PC Gamer has released what they claim to be an entire list of species and compatible classes in Star Wars the Old Republic. Here’s the list:

Humans: Can play every class.
Zabraks: Can play every class.
Miraluka: Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular
Sith Pureblood: Sith Warrior, Sith Inquisitor
Chiss: Imperial Agent, Bounty Hunter
Rattataki: Imperial Agent, Bounty Hunter, Sith Inquisitor
Mirialan: Trooper, Smuggler, Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular
Twi’lek: Sith Inquisitor, Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler
Cyborg: Trooper, Smuggler, Imperial Agent, Sith Warrior, Bounty Hunter

This is a great piece of information to speculate on. We first see there are no Cathar on the list (which is going to disappoint a lot of furry fans …) and then there are the Cyborg. For me, a huge sci-fi geek, the prospect of having a Cyborg character is dream fulfilling. I can’t decide which would be more cool, Cyborg light saber wielding Sith Warrior (ala general Grievous) or a dashing Imperial Agent whose cybernetic implants are all the talk among the ladies. Prospect of having such character almost makes me change my mind and play Empire at start. My Trooper and Smuggler Cyborgs would have a dark backstory as to why half their body is metal and not flesh. I wonder though why they didn’t do Jedi Knight Cyborgs. I mean, Luke Skywalker could be imagined as cyborg with his robotic arm and all.

To prove that his list is just speculation and nowhere near final we have Daniel Erickson posting on the official forums. You can check what he had to say on our Dev Tracker page (I am just linking there to show off how you can now link to single posts on our Dev Tracker page) or you can just read his post bellow:

Hey Folks,

The species/class combo list you’re referencing is not accurate. If it does appear in the magazine, that’s unfortunate.

My guess is that an enthusiastic member of the press wrote down everything he saw in the character creation screen which, as we’ve stated often, is nowhere near final. Occasionally we’ll have species in odd classes or in all classes because of a bug or testing.

Hope that helps!

Daniel

Game Not Out Before July 1st Hints EA CFO

Published by under rumor, speculation on Mar. 15. 2011.

You need months of different flavors of beta testing before making a product generally available

Several major gaming news outlets have reported that EA’s CFO Eric Brown hinted during today’s Lazard Capital Markets Technology and Media Conference that Star Wars the Old Republic will not be releasing before July 1. Here’s the transcription of what he said that made people conclude this:

So we said it’s going to launch sometime in calendar, but not within Fiscal 11 … So that basically pens down between, you know, April 1st and December 31st of this calendar year.

It’s also reasonable to infer that it’s not in our Q1 guidance. We gave Q1 Fiscal 11, Fiscal 12 non-gap revenue guidance, minus 39 minus 44 cents and I think it’s not unreasonable to infer that it’s not included in that 90 day period.

Darth Hater has a full transcript of all the things said at the conference pertaining to the Old Republic and you can read it here.
The more important things to note are:

  • You need months of different flavors of beta testing before making a product generally available (closed beta, semi-closed beta and open beta were mentioned)
  • We’ll talk more about Star Wars at the coming E3 event
  • Paraphrase: they want to cater to both experienced MMO player as well as newcomers to the genre (non-gamer Star Wars fans)
  • We have nothing ruled out, in terms of intent or design future micro-transactions because some interesting opportunities is there. The key is you know, what to include in a base monthly fee versus what do you charge extra for? So that requires some pretty careful decisions making.
    but
For now we’re focused on the more traditional monthly subscription model but

News was also reported by Massively and vg247 and it seems that TOR Legends were the first to report the story.

Although this should not come as a surprise to anyone we can’t think of a better comment to this than point you to this website here. Feel free to push the button several times.

Delayed Until September?

Published by under rumor, speculation on Jan. 28. 2011.

Game business site MCV reported a few days back that “development sources” told them that Star Wars: The Old Republic will be released worldwide this September. In the comments section of this very brief and unsupported news item we see Michael@MCV (supposedly chief at MCV) repeating several times that their source is not EA Louse and that their source was credible enough for them to publish this. Here’s a quote from the comments:

We heard a date. We added context around what is looking like drawn-out, perhaps challenged, production. That’s it. You’re just reading too much into it, and being strangely defensive over the suggestion that it might be later than Spring, or delivered earlier than the end of EA’s FY2012.
September may well change, yes. But currently, that’s the target.

Just a day later Tyler Rowe of Bioware wrote on the official forums that Spring 2011 is still the target. You can read the thread this was posted in here.

Personally, I am a big fan of release when it is done philosophy of game development. If this means that the game needs more time to be completely done I am all for delay and do not find it a bit disturbing – fanboy or not. I think MMO gamers are sick and tired of rushed out releases.

I am guessing that Pax East will be the place to be at to hear next big news about SWTOR anyways. Until than this is just heresay speculation, but we had to report on it since a lot of major news outlets have also reported on it.

Bioware teases with another code

Published by under rumor, speculation on Nov. 19. 2010.

Bioware just sent out another QR barcode image similar to the ones we mentioned earlier this week. There is again a binary code hidden within.

This translates to:

Guess what? This is the website of the British Secret Intelligence Service, better known to most as MI6 (yes the one where Mr. Bond works). the curent rumor is that the next Bioware game will be a multiplayer shooter type of game set slightly ahead of current time and will be done in fashion of Call of Duty and Bad Company. Can’t do nothing but wait it out until the Video Game Awards on December 11th to find out for sure.

Speculations of DOOM, Part 2, The Cure

Published by under Editorial, rumor, speculation on Nov. 03. 2010.

There is a feeling of slight unrest within The Old Republic community as of late. We discussed the causes for this in the previous part of this article (which I recommend reading if you haven’t already, otherwise this part will not be so clear) and we’ll try to address some of the concerns in as unbiased manner as possible.

Is there really not enough time to release all information before release?

Lets assume that we have 22 weeks left before the game hits open beta and information is then released by everyone. I have made a list of things we should be receiving info on in the time left, based on what Bioware released so far and new game mechanics we all expect to see in the game:

  • Week 1-4: Jedi Consular, Trooper, Bounty Hunter, Sith Inquisitor class trailer/info
  • Week 5: Companion mechanics detailed info (all companions should be revealed through class reveals)
  • Week 6: Playable species
  • Week 7-9: Detailed PvP/battlegrounds information
  • Week 9-11: Crafting
  • Week 12-14: unrevealed planets (?)
  • Week 15-18: End game reveals
  • Week: 18-22: Various additional information

Speculations of DOOM, Part 1, The Cause

Published by under Editorial, rumor, speculation on Oct. 27. 2010.

>

The Old Republic fans are a bunch of people in love. They are in love with the concept behind the game Bioware is making. Star Wars universe populated by you and your friends in which everyone gets to be a hero. How can you blame them? That is why the moment someone mentions that there could be any kind of trouble with the game there are cries of terror showing up all over the official forums and fansites. There are several things that happened simultaneously these past few weeks that caused the current wave of doomsayers. We wanted to address these in this two part editorial describing the causes in part one, that you are reading now, and offering some explanations and suggestions in part two that will follow shortly.

Causes

  1. During the convention season we were treated with loads of new game information. For the first time people were able to sit down and play the game. We also saw some higher level gameplay footage for the first time and were shown Revan’s dungeon. Space ships and advanced classes were also explained in detail. Following up on all that info we were also given a lot of info about the Smuggler and the Jedi Knight. Next three updates were about a planet, biographies and a timeline. If it was any other time of the year these would be enough, but after the eventful convention season all of it feels lackluster.
  2. Advertised release date is getting very close. Here’s the math that is scaring fans. Everyone is expecting the game to come out in April, May the latest. Any date later than that is unexpected (even May is cutting it close) because summer is dead season. This gives us 6 months tops before the game’s release. Based on Bioware’s own policy that they don’t talk about it before its done people are thinking the following: “If they are not talking about so many core systems that means they are not done yet. Will they be done by release (in such a short period of time)?”. And MMORPG gamers are already tired of all those rushed out releases that ruined so many potentially great projects (who said Warhammer online, Age of Conan, Star Trek Online, APB – OMG are there that many?)
  3. EA Louse. He is a “whistle blower” from inside Mythic (the makers of Warhammer online) that whines about how life ain’t fair and how management is to blame for WAR failing and him losing his job. Since Bioware and Mythic are both parts of EA and some parts of Mythic started helping out with SWTOR some time ago he made a statement about SWTOR. According to him the project already spent 300 million dollars and that it will be the biggest failure in the history of video games. This coming from a guy that works on a game that spent $50 million and has 100k subscribers right now.
  4. There is a rumor floating around that at this year’s Game Developer’s Conference people were saying that there is trouble in TOR land and Bioware is flying people into Austin office to help out.

Enough to put anyone caring about the game into full on panic mode, right? Fear not fellow TOR fans, there are two sides to every story and we will be going in depth on The Cures in our Part 2 of this article tomorrow.

Part 2 of the article has been published and you can read it here
