Cosmetic Gear – How important is it to you?

Published by under Game Mechanics, gameplay,Role Play on Nov. 09. 2011.

As I have shown in a previous article – Is “She” really a “She”? Female Gamers and Gender Bending in MMORPGs – 60 percent of MMO players have role-played. But, even among those who haven’t, I think most can say that they have happened upon that one gear set that really struck them as “perfect” for their character. Either it was perfectly menacing, evil, just, good, sweet, innocent or any one of a million different adjectives, but whatever it was that made it that way, it was perfect for their character.

BioWare will not have appearance tabs at launch, but they have indicated that the feature is high on their post-launch list of “things to do.” In the meantime, they do have “iconic” gear, like special robes, Sandpeople garb, etc. You’ll be able to mod these items in such a way as to make them “viable” (although not necessarily optimal) though the entire game.

What about you? Do you wear cosmetic gear in “safe zones?” Are you anxiously awaiting an appearance tab? What do you think about the prospect of being able to have “iconic” gear that you can mod up to level 50? And what about the Slave Leia outfit? Will you have your character, or a companion, wear it? What if it is modifiable? Will you mod it and wear it in Flashpoints, Operations and as you Quest?

I hope you liked my Article, and I look forward to your comments. Please be sure to follow me on Twitter – @Daelda – Until next time, May the Force be with you!

I’m not much of a RPer myself, but I think cosmetics are great! They make your Character YOUR Character.
I am sure that SWTOR will have many customization possibilities with time as its a game that is supposed to bond you with your char through the story, it would only seam like a logical step to also implement this.

I’m a huge fan of cosmetic gear, especially in regards to finding the perfect ‘look’ for your character. Han /always/ looks like Han, Chewie looks like Chewie, etc. I love the idea of finding just the right set of gear while I’m leveling, and keeping it iconic. Sadly, for once, this is a case where WoW’s transmog actually beats the modification system (which I love), because it lets me achieve my goal better. Still, I won’t complain, as I’m hoping and praying modifications get expanded to become the norm, rather than the exception.

Agreed… Huge fan of cosmetic gear. I find it hard to be as immersed as I would like to be if my character is wearing something she wouldn’t be caught dead in or is wearing the wrong outfit for the current roleplay at the moment.

Yes, it is important to me. I love having my character “look” the way she is supposed to. But I usually worry about that in “safe zones” when I’m RPing. When questing or OOC, I’ll wear what gives me the best stats/protection. That’s why I love appearance tabs. But I’ll make do until they’re put in post-launch. Hope I have enough bank space. 🙂

I’ve never been an RPer myself, but that it not say that I don’t like to look the part while playing MMOs. I have missed gear once I’ve outgrown it and had to make do with higher stats but a shabby look.

I’m all for choice and believe that it it should be up to the player to decide what they wear to quest, raid or just hang out at the local cantina. Just as long as it is viable for whatever it is that you have chosen to do with your time.

    Custom avatar

I’m not a RP player, but I loooove to pimp out my character

I hate custom appearance, I want my character to look the same as everybody else. Thousands of people with the same gear makes the game totally enjoyable to me!
    LOL
Im still bitter about not being able to choose Twi Lek as a sith warrior 🙁
